In today’s competitive world, it is imperative to ‘appreciate’ people directly in contact with you to boost their morale, social inclusion and to motivate them to accept peer support. Our relationships with people are what help them to shape the views they have for society. This is why we should help them feel positive and abide with positivity to form short-term as well as long-range plans to better shape their future. This is where Appreciative Advising plays the most crucial role.
What is Appreciative Advising?
Appreciative Advising in general refers to positive reinforcement of students, learners and other workplace counterparts to help them feel reassured that their efforts are not going unnoticed.
It is basically the practice of asking very positive and open-ended questions to your peers to help them optimize their experience and induces them to achieve their dreams and goals by tapping into their hidden potentials.
The most fundamental purpose of appreciative advising is to help academic students get akin to personal development.
How to practice Appreciative Advising?
As an appreciative adviser, it should be your motto to help people feel sure about their goals with a proactive approach and positively influence their lives. By patting on their backs or giving good reviews, you should encourage them in the right direction.
The new appreciative advising model is an advising philosophy that helps students/peers achieve their potentials by interacting positively with their advisers. They are encouraged to share their ideas and philosophies about life and you as an adviser have to boost them in the proper direction – the right way.
The concept follows a method of chain-reaction which is as follows:
The Six Phases of Appreciative Advising Training
- Disarm – Creating a positive first impression that creates a safe and welcoming environment for students/ peers.
- Discover – Asking open-ended questions to coerce students/peers in revealing their strengths and passions willingly. Ask each positive question based upon the previous question’s answer.
- Dream – Make them reflect on their future life and career goals by motivating them to follow their passions and make it big in life.
- Design – Inspire them to make goals based on an incremental formula so that they are achievable in time.
- Deliver – Support them in their time of need, every step of the way. This will help them refine their goals in the long run.
- Don’t Settle – Make them strive for more and make them raise their bar of self expectations by being more proactive, forthcoming and eventful.
Is Appreciative Advising helpful?
In most cases, appreciative advising has been seen to bring about a positive change in the attitudes of people towards their careers and their general way of life.
To achieve this positive change, you as an adviser must apply this model on yourself first and promote positive reinforcement in your own personal life and see how far you have succeeded in achieving your hopes and dreams with the help of positive reinforcements in every decision you have taken.
Once this is done, you will be more self-aware of how to conduct reflection exercises to help students and peers interact more freely. This will make you think according to a peer and help you to answer their questions with more profound and effective answers.
How can Appreciative Advising help people around you?
Appreciative Advisers should understand that identifying the strengths and potential of their students/peers is key to help them grow their social as well as professional repertoire.
These advising skills will help you strengthen the morale of a student/ peer and help you to positively impact the student/ peer’s life and make them become better human beings and professionals.
Appreciative Advisers create the momentum necessary for a person’s self-development and social skill. They help someone to not surrender to their fears and strive harder to achieve their goals. Persistence and constant hard work leads to the achievement of fulfilling goals. This is why Appreciative Advising is in vogue nowadays.
Appreciative Education is now an organized and functional field of education. It mainly strives to embrace a positive approach to help people accomplish their goals by formulating a healthy student and advisor relationship.
Be the change you want to see, help people transform their lives!
